Networking: Installations & Support

Frequently Asked Questions Frequently Asked Questions

Why should I regularly maintain and monitor my server, once it is installed and secured shouldn’t it be okay?

No! The nature of computers and the Internet mean that new exploits and threats are being discovered and created every day so a server that is secure one day may be vulnerable the next.

To maintain a stable network it is imperative that basic maintenance is routinely performed. It is a lot simpler, less costly and less destructive to deal with a potential issues then to recover from a failure once it has occurred.

Why does my server(s) need to be updated with security updates and service packs?

Software manufacturers (such as Microsoft) don’t know what’s coming in the future. The software they release has bugs and security loopholes contained in it and as these are discovered Microsoft release patches to ‘fix’ these loopholes.

At the same time there are hackers, viruses, and many other destructive forces looking to exploit these loopholes, so if your network is not updated with security patches and service packs as they are released it is only a matter of time before your system is exploited.

Why do my Event Logs need to be checked for errors & warnings?

As they occur, errors and warnings are logged in the Windows Event Logs. These highlight a particular instance of something unexpected happening. Sometimes the events can be of little importance to you or your system, but they can also point to critical events that if left could effect the stability of your system.

Event Logs should be regularly reviewed and the errors assessed. Whether they can be safely ignored, require minor ‘tweaks’ to your software, or urgently require action.

Why is it important to have free disk space available on my server?

Servers – considerable more than workstations – require free disk space to function properly. On a normal server many services will use disk space as they require.

On a typical Small Business Server 2000 system, if disk space starts to run out, email and the Internet will stop functioning, network printers will slow down or stop, and the entire server will grind to a halt.

This doesn’t take into consideration any user files that cannot be saved, and the associated downtime that will be caused as the problem is rectified.

Why do I need to check my server with Microsoft Security Baseline Analyser (MSBA)?

As well as security patches and Service Packs, there are many other security threats to you server such as weak passwords, conflicting configuration issues, Internet Information Services (IIS) vulnerabilities, and many more.

MSBA scans a given server and reports on the security threats and possible resolutions. It is highly recommended that MSBA is run on all servers in use to test a security solution.

Why should I need to scan my server with eEye Digital Retina?

With similarities to Microsoft Security Baseline Analyser (MSBA), eEye Digital Retina scans networks for vulnerabilities.

As well as having an increased scope over MSBA, Digital Retina tries to hack into your network, and furthermore attempts Denial of Service (DoS) attacks where it will actually try and stop your server from functioning.

Why should I perform a simulated attack and Denial of Service attacks (DoS attacks) on my server?

When implementing I.T. solutions it is imperative to test them – especially when security is concerned. Therefore Key4 utilises Digital Retina to prove security on a given system. Even if no threats are found the process increases peace of mind.

If threats are found in your security solution then a potentially disastrous situation may have been avoided.

What is included in your ‘Network Support Server’ Package, will it maintain my server so I don’t have to worry?

Yes. Networking Support Server is designed to maintain and protect your servers on an ongoing basis. We secure a server and maintain a servers ongoing health meaning you don’t have to.
